Grades 1-8

Religious education classes are held in the lower Cathedral church on Sunday mornings from 9:45 am to 11:00 am.

Sunday school children participate in the choir and periodically sing with the adult choir at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass at the Cathedral.

First Communion:
Most children receive First Eucharist in Grade 2, early in the month of May. Preparation for First Communion is a two year program, so parents are encouraged to register their children for first grade. A baptismal record should be presented as soon as possible after registering.

Confirmation:
Candidates must be in High School and must have at least one year of religious education in the past two years. This second year of preparation will then fulfill the archdiocesan requirement of a two year program. Classes meet weekly on Sunday 9:45 am to 11:00 am in the Lower Cathedral School. After the candidates successfully complete the classes and projects, they receive Confirmation in the Spring.

The RCIA program is coordinated by Ms. Judith Stonger, Lay Minister at the Cathedral, and the RCIA team.

The RCIA or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which unbaptized women and men, or those baptized in another Christian denomination, enter the Catholic Church. It is a formation process which includes several stages marked by study, prayer, reflection, discussion and liturgy. Participants in the RCIA are known as either catechumens (if unbaptized) or candidates (if baptized in a Christian denomination other than the Roman Catholic).

The RCIA process at the Cathedral of St. Joseph is facilitated by Judy Stonger and Leah Stroman. It begins in September and ends with full acceptance into the Catholic Church on Holy Saturday of the following year. For additional information about the RCIA program, please contact out RCIA Director, Judy Stonger at 249-8431.
